In 2012, the Sports Center went through a full renovation and expansion adding new cross trainers, elliptical machines, treadmills and free weights and updated wellness amenities. "An unbelievably friendly group of people live here. Most have come from other states, yet there is a nice mix of locals and other North Carolinians. There is a great golf and country club within the gates and it is very reasonably priced. Porters Neck is located near the Atlantic coast, just a short drive away from several ocean beaches. The University of North Carolina- Wilmington is nearby, providing cultural activities, adult education and seminars, and collegiate athletic viewing opportunities. Wilmington has been dubbed "Hollywood East" due to the many motion picture and television productions filmed here. This has a positive impact on the already active and high level of theatrical performances throughout the year in a wide range of venues. Outdoor activities abound, such as golf, tennis, organized running, boating, fishing,surfing, water paddling, volleyball, and senior softball. "
