Retirees at Tellico Village Build Home Computers for Thousands of Tennessee Students
BEST PLACE TO RETIRE IN TENNESSEE
Thousands of Eastern Tennessee students now have access to home computers thanks to the Computer Users Club at the active adult community, Tellico Village.
The Technology Access Program (TAP) is an initiative of the volunteer-only club that is comprised only of Tellico Village residents. The 30 men and women who volunteer for the program have been refurbishing computers and donating them to area students since 2007.
"This endeavor is the most meaningful thing I've ever done in my life," said Warren Sanders, co-chair of TAP. "It's so rewarding when you see the look on a kid's face."
Since the club's inception, more than 3,200 computers have been donated to almost 5,300 students in and around the Loudon County club headquarters.
"The volunteers at TAP are unsung heroes who devote their time and skills to a cause that is often overlooked," said Susan Fox, Lenoir City Schools Family Resource Director. "Our students are so appreciative of the time and effort the TAP volunteers put towards ensuring they have home access to up-to-date technology."
TAP is also a Microsoft Certified Partner. The club works with Microsoft to obtain lower costs on certain software, reducing the overall operating costs for the nonprofit.
The Computer Users Club is one of more than 200 resident-managed volunteer organizations at Tellico Village.
