Island Fever in Charleston South Carolina?

Islands Of South Carolina Magnolia

Who would have thought historic Charleston, one of the best cities to retire, would be connected by so many fabulous islands? Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island, Sullivans Island, Daniel Island and the Isle of Palms, to name a few.

We chuckle when we visit these Charleston neighborhoods as they each tell us why their South Carolina coastal community is better than their competitor. Daniel Island folks claim Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island are located out in the boonies. Kiawah Island claims to be the Hamptons of the South and Seabrook Island must be thrilled to ride on the coat tail of its celebrity neighbor, Kiawah Island, host of the 2012 PGA Championship. People on the Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island are too darn busy doing nothing at the beach to even care. Folly Beach probably wishes Map Quest called it ‘Folly Island’, just to fit in. To us, whoever named the seaside towns in Charleston South Carolina, had a case of 'island fever'.

This Low Country real estate is blessed by preserved history going back to 1901. Cobblestone streets and ancient churches still decorate this charming city today. When you drive down the narrow streets of Charleston or ride in a classic horse drawn carriage, your eyes may be drawn to the large sailboats passing through the harbor at the end of the streets. The salty air smells delicious and touches your soul. Restaurants in downtown Charleston tease window shoppers by allowing the savory scents of their gourmet kitchens to flow out the front doors to their outdoor cafes. Ask anyone who’s been to Charleston and most certainly, they love Charleston. We know we do.

The City of Charleston has done a fabulous job connecting the islands by elevated highways and bridges. If you have a fear of heights, the really high bridges like the Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge, might take a bit of getting used to. In no time, you may find yourself on that bridge, joining 40,000 health fanatics at the annual Cooper River Bridge Run, the largest 5K race in the Southeast, held in the spring. If you live in Charleston, how easy it is to bounce around, weekend after weekend, to a completely different beach atmosphere, all within 30 minutes of downtown.
