Mountain Biking in North Georgia - 25th Annual Six Gap Century Race
For some people a spinning class is the highlight of their fitness activities, but in northern Georgia, residents look forward to exciting cycling events that are fun for the whole family. On September 29, 2013, Georgia welcomes everyone to participate or observe the twenty-fifth year of the Six Gap Century and Three Gap Fifty in Dahlonega, named Best Bang for Buck Retirement City. This challenging event has attracted many Baby Boomers to the area and has been a contributing factor for them on where to retire in Georgia. The combination of world class mountain biking and stunning scenery in the Georgia mountains is a dream come true for retiree’s with a passion for cycling and outdoor activities.
This year, the event kicks off with the huge 11 race series for adults and youths. As of today, there are 2,600 registered riders. The cycling courses are meant test the endurance and stamina of each rider with more than 11,200 ft of incline cycling throughout the 104 mile course of the the Six Gap Century event. For riders interested in taking it down a notch, the Three Gap Fifty offers half the distance and gap challenges with a 58 mile course. Newbies have a third option and can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Amicalola Falls State Park with the 35-mile Valley Ride as an introduction to what is expected from riders during the Six Gap Century and Three Gap Fifty Dahlonega.
This event has grown to become one of the biggest cycling events since Tour De Georgia, which was known as America’s Premier Cycling Event for five years from 2003 to 2008. The tour was an international 600 miles cycling event and winners like Lance Armstrong prepared for other tours with these courses. The 7-day course invited cyclists and spectators from Peach Tree City to Atlanta, Georgia and raised more than $400,000 to fund eight cancer research grants. Now the celebration and support has moved towards the Amicalola Falls State Park and the Six Gap Century and Three Gap Fifty Dahlonega continues to attract athletic minded Baby Boomers searching where to retire in Georgia. Big Canoe is known as one of the most popular gated mountain communities in northern Georgia.
