Published on October 22, 2013

Mark your calendars for the highly anticipated Bocce Ball Playoffs and Award Ceremony being held at the Wildcat Pavilion at Big Canoe, a North Georgia mountain community  and one of the best places to live in Georgia.

Bocce Ball is one of the most popular Big Canoe social clubs which is really at the forefront of a sport that has been gaining in popularity in the US since 1989, especially with Baby Boomers. Bocce Ball is something anyone can play and has been popular for almost ten years at Big Canoe where everyone is welcomed and encouraged to play whether in the competitive leagues or just for a social game with friends or family. According to Big Canoe legend, their first court was created in 2005 from an old, but newly “discovered”, horseshoe pit during the building of the Wildcat Pavilion. The activity exploded in popularity so wildly among residents that two more courts were built to accommodate the demand.

At this point in time, the Big Canoe Bocce Ball Club in Northern Georgia has over 200 residents signing up for league play for each of the two seasons. Prior to each season, there is a free  camp for prospective league players to hone their skills and share successful  strategies. After the camp, there are scheduled matches for approximately 8 weeks of challenging and social fun as well as friendly competition. It all concludes with sets of exciting playoff matches and a jovial awards event which, for this season, is coming to this North Georgia mountain community on November 2.

Everyone is welcome to participate in bocce ball at this popular Big Canoe social club; many residents play without joining the leagues.  On Monday evenings during the “Bocce Ball Seasons,” the club offers a social evening with quick casual matches and instruction if needed. If residents are just looking to play with friends or family or without commitment, they can sign up for court time and even rent the bocce balls through the tennis center.

For being such a modern trend, Bocce Ball has been documented as far back as 5200 B.C.E.  Its prevalence has waxed and waned throughout history. It was not uncommon that at certain times the game became so popular it was a major distraction for workers and would then be banned by the leaders. The bans would eventually be be lifted or forgotten and the cycle would continue. The game has gone through many changes throughout the centuries.

Originally played with rocks or coconuts, it is now played with composite or metal balls. Bocce Ball has also been known by a variety of names such as lawn bowling and skittles and has experienced a  variety of rule changes as well.  Nothing can hold down its popularity, however, because according to the World Bocce League, there are more than 25 million Bocce enthusiasts in the United States today. None are more enthusiastic than the Bocce Ball club in this North Georgia mountain community and one of the best places to live in Georgia. The club, one of the most popular Big Canoe social clubs, would like nothing more than to see participation continue to grow as new Baby Boomers join the neighborhood.
