Fun Things to Do In and Around Sylva North Carolina

Sylva North Carolina Holiday Events
Published on December 2, 2013

The North Pole is closer than ever this year and residents of Sylva NC neighborhoods are excited to participate! As December creeps up on most of America, residents in the mountain communities of North Carolina are in for a big treat this holiday season. Visits to the new North Pole on The Polar Express began on November 8, 2013 and will be running until December 29, 2013. For the next couple of weeks, resident owners of Balsam Mountain Preserve real estate and visitors can ride the Polar Express to the North Pole and reflect on the book that started it all!

Originally written by Van Allsburg in 1985, The Polar Express is an enchanting story about a boy who journeys to the North Pole and is given a gift from Santa Claus. The Polar Express is the magical train that brings holiday cheer to the children of the surrounding towns. This classic holiday tale sold more than 6 million copies and is the inspiration for the design and construction of the Smoky Mountain holiday train. This is not the first time residents of the private mountain communities near Asheville have traveled on the recreated Polar Express.

In 2004, the Polar Express was introduced to the residents of the local Sylva NC neighborhoods and has become a holiday event at the Smoky Mountain Railroad ever since. The first year, the ride was expected to attract approximately 3,000 passengers. Instead, 33,000 passengers wanted to ride the Polar Express and it has been increasing each season. This year, The Polar Express is estimating approximately 50,000 passengers and the new North Pole created by Brandt Brooks and Jamie Bradley, is a must see attraction during this holiday season for owners of Balsam Mountain Preserve real estate.

The North Pole village design was based on the story’s setting and features the elegant and gothic brick architecture described in the literature. The village is comprised of six large structures that are 300 ft. long each. The highest point of all of these structures is 35 ft. and the smallest structure is 12 ft., which makes it a perfect size for a child’s house or maybe it is fit for an elf! The structures are adorned with about 60 windows and more than 1000 sparkling lights to enhance the magic of the already enchanting scene. The village is complete with the 12 ft. sleigh which is ideal for Santa when he departs on his merry way towards private mountain communities near Asheville on Christmas Eve!

The North Pole is not the only thing that is attracting visitors and residents outside of the mountain communities in Western North Carolina. The Sylva NC neighborhoods are excited to share their holiday celebrations and traditions. On Saturday December 14, 2013, the town of Sylva, North Carolina unites for their annual Christmas Parade from 3:00- 5:00 p.m. The whole town attends to celebrate the holiday season in style! Residents living in the surrounding communities, like Balsam Mountain Preserve are encouraged to take part.

Balsam Mountain Preserve real estate owners with creative talent can join the local Sylva Garden Club and experience more fun things to do in Sylva North Carolina. This year, the garden club is creating wreaths for the holidays and has visited the local Christmas Tree farm and attended a wreath making workshop.

For those property owner's who cherish traditional Christmas shows, The Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts is the place to be. This month, residents in the surrounding communities can travel to Franklin, North Carolina to see Robert Ray’s, Home for the Holidays, on December 6, 2013 and The Nutcracker Ballet on December 20-22, 2013. Residents living at Balsam Mountain Preserve and in nearby private mountain communities near Asheville have plenty of entertainment activities and fun things to do in Sylva North Carolina during this month. These magical events leave visitors coming back for more!
